Monarch Butterfly populations in Minnesota this summer were 38 percent below normal. In Santa Cruz, California numbers were low as well in their annual Thanksgiving Monarch count. It seems as though monarch butterfly populations are declining, not increasing. Some have cited the irregular season for the decline while others have cited human pressures on over-wintering sites and food supplies.
