With animals that have a mate for life what happens if their mate dies?

Monogamous animals are actually not as pure as originally thought, with even blue-ribbon mates like swans and gibbons have been found to “cheat” and leave their significant others. Only three to five percent of mammals mate for life, with little if any recorded “grief” when the mate dies.
