Have campaigns to rid Nigeria of Guinea worms been successful?

Yes. Some scientists predict that dracunculiasis (or Guinea worm disease) will soon be eradicated, after smallpox. In 2008 there were fewer than 5,000 cases reported in Nigeria and its five neighboring countries, which compares very favorably with 1986, when there were around 3.5 million cases in a 20 country region of which Nigeria is part.
