Scientists believe that some species of the giant tortoises have gone extinct since Darwin’s time. Early sailors use to stockpile tortoises on their ships to eat, decimating the population. Tortoises have such long life spans and slow reproduction that removing even a few reproducing adults can wreak havoc on the population. The introduction of goats has also been a problem for the giant tortoises. Goats compete with the giant tortoises for food.
