Chesapeake Bay Foundation has an annual Clean The Bay day every year and 2012 is no different. They will be cleaning it this year on June 12th. In 2011 they had more than 6,500 volunteers come out to help clean up the bay from all over the Virginia portion. They helped remove about 200,000 pounds of debris from more than 500 miles of the shoreline. 15 cities and counties, 15 independent organizations, 11 military installations and 8 state parks helped in the coordination of the clean up effort. More than 115,000 volunteers have been helping to clean the bay since 1989 and have removed around 5.5 million pounds of debris from 5,000 miles of shoreline.
