Have alligators been known to attack waterskiers?

In general, alligators are less aggressive than their close relatives, the crocodiles. However, any animals, when threatened, can attack. This is a defense for its own protection. Water skiing causes much noise and distrubance in the water (the waves are felt by the alligator). Such disturbances may cause the alligator to become scared or cause it to feel the need to protect its home or offspring (female alligators overlook for offspring for up to two years). If threatened, the alligator may come towards the skier. However, the skier is often moving fast and probably cannot be caught by the alligator. It is best to ski in areas where alligators are not common.
