USAID lacks the purview to enact environmental protection regulations in other countries. However, working in conjunction with respective host governments, USAID has helped in numerous conservation efforts. One project that has received particular attention is the Latin American Parks in Peril project, started in 1997. Working alongside local governments and NGOs, the project has been able to protect 11 million hectares spanning 37 national parks and reserves.
