In 1964 the effects of the tsunami waves caused by a huge earthquake off the coast of Alaska were felt as far away as southern California and were recorded on tide gauges throughout the Pacific Ocean.’
Of course, tsunamis have reached the west coast of what is now north America. The risk is always present, although Washington and Oregon are probably at a greater risk for significant damage.
The California Geological Society has listed numerous historical tsunamis that have been recorded in central and southern California from 1812 to 2000. Of these tsunamis, the strongest ones topped out at 9.5 Mw.
