Interbreeding in whale species is how modern day whale species came to be over the course of millions of years. Interbreeding still happens today, but between populations of the same specie of whale. In the past this has created new species, however, it is a problem for a number of different populations of whale specie, particularly whale shark and right whales.
Interbreeding decreases genetic diversity. Small variation in genetic diversity creates less of a chance for natural selection in the affected whale specie, which threatens its overall survival.
