I believe that the percentage of land cleared by slash and burn techniques has stayed the same over previous years, but it will decline due to the development of slash and char techniques. Slash and char allows much of the biomass and carbon that would have been burned to stay on the ground in the form of charcoal. Scientists are currently working on efficient means of practicing this. It is much more healthy for the environment and would the soil that new ranches would be on to be much more fertile.
