Has short hair among men always been associated with conservatism in the U.S.?

Although there may be a link with a short, tidy haircut and conservatism, the Founding Fathers had quite longer hair.  Some even went so far as sporting wigs.  Conservatives generally aim for conserving the Consitution, and the men that signed it had quite different haircuts.

I’m pretty sure short hair became associated with conservatism in the 1960s. Men in the counterculture grew their hair long, copying famous cultural figures like the Beatles. Men who kept their hair short were declaring their support for more traditional ideals. Not coincidentally, the most famous musical about the 1960s counterculture is called Hair.
