Has the recession caused a lot of polluting companies to go out of business?

The recession has definitely caused many companies to go out of business. Some of these businesses have small carbon footprints and others, large ones. The recession has no direct effect on companies that are polluting in particular; rather, the recession causes many larger companies to “shed the fat”, reduce inefficiencies, and decrease overall costs. On a macro level, the recession reduces pollution because of this AND because companies decrease production and output.
