Pollution has not been nearly as significant a factor in manatee mortality as have collisions with watercraft. These are very slow-moving animals that are frequently found at the water’s surface, since they need to breathe oxygen. This puts them in direct contact with boats. Pollution in the form of abandoned fishing lines, in which the manatees become entangled, or discarded garbage, which they will eat, has been a factor in the decimation of their population.
