It is still not clear what the long term health impacts will be for Gulf residents. While some clean up workers have gone to the hospital for nausea, headaches and chest pains, it is unclear if that can be attributed to contact with the oil, dispersant chemicals, or the combination of 100 degree weather while working in a full chemical suit. However, one thing is certain, and that is that the oil spill will have mental health impacts on residents of the Gulf Coast. A survey conducted after the Exxon Valdez spill found that people more likely to have more anxiety disorders, post traumatic stress syndrome, and depression. The economic pressure along with disappearing livelihoods and personal stress will undoubtedly impact many gulf residents mental health.
