Globally, every year about 75 billion metric tons of top soil (equivalent of about 6 million hectares of arable land) is removed from the land primarily from the agricultural land by wind and water. In addition, every year about 12 million hectares of arable land is rendered useless and abandoned because of non-sustainable farming practice. In recent times, meaning in the last fifty years or so, soil erosion has intensified, grossly outpacing the creation of new soil.
