Has agriculture changed that much in the last 100 years?

Yes. Increased mechanization over the past one hundred years has made agriculture in the industrialized world much more efficient and less labor intensive. Output has grown dramatically which in turn has allowed for the wide availability of relatively inexpensive food, and, perhaps more importantly, allowed for large portions of the population to be available for non-farm occupations.
