As far as records date (back into the 1800s), no, California, has not had a 9 magnitude earthquake. Even the famous 1906 San Francisco earthquake was just a 7.9. Geologists have theorized that some subduction zones are not capable of producing 9 M earthquakes, but there is still not enough evidence to solidify this idea. 9 M or greater earthquakes are rare: six have occurred in the past fifty years, the greatest being the 9.5 Valdivia quake in 1960. The largest quake in the U.S. on record is actually the 9.2 that hit Alaska in 1964.
