I think Wangari Maathai could compete with John Muir’s accomplishments. She really beat the odds and had to fight much opposition. She founded the Green Belt Movement in her native Kenya, was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree. She dedicated her life to environmental conservation and poverty reduction. Among her many awards was the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize. She continues to be a tireless advocate for democracy, human rights and environmental conservation and an inspiration to the world.
