Is the halibut caught in California a different species than the big ones caught in Alaska?

The true Halibut caught in both of these areas are Pacific Halibut. These are fish that live in very deep water and average between 15 and 20 pounds although, some have been caught weighing over 300 pounds. The reason the Halibut may not seem like they are as large in California is because they are often not actually Halibut. The California Halibut is a name used interchangeably for both Halibut and Flounder which range from 6 to 50 pounds. While the giant Halibut still lives around the shores of California, you will not see them unless you are in very deep water.
