Is hydroelectric a good energy source, or is it too disruptive to natural habitats and geography?

I would say it is far too disruptive to natural habitats, geography and local populations. For instance, China’s internationally contested 3 Gorges Dam forced more than 1.6 million people from their homes. And affected roughly 410 miles of the Yangtze River. It will have countless deleterious effects on the environment and endangered chinese species of wildlife. On the other hand it produces 22,500 megawatts of electricity, which is huge!
