Soil does make a good insulator and it is environmentally friendly as well. The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco has a living roof that covers the entire facility with a seven-inch thick layer of soil with thousands of types of plants covering it. Soil has a relatively high heat capacity making it a great insulator for the building.
