Even though a golf course is mostly grass and trees, the operation of the course contributes greenhouse gases and requires fuel and water. Par “0″ is a certification that promotes eco-efficiency within the golf industry. Courses and companies are awarded certificates based on the ecological impact of their operations.

Some institutions take aim at maintaining or improving the ecological impact of the game. The Environmental Institute for Golf is committed to strengthening the compatibility of the game of golf with our natural environment: http://www.eifg.org/

While playing golf should not harm the environment, the construction and maintenance of the golf courses certainly can. They use a large amount of water for the grass, and constructing a golf course may include clearing the natural landscape of trees and other plants.

However some believe you can manage a golf course to actually have a positive impact on the environment. The right care of a golf course “can increase habitat variety, enhance biodiversity, and protect delicate and rare habitats such as dune and heathland.”

As far as Republicans go, I’m sure some care :)
