It goes back half a century to when more scientists became concerned about the possible effects of global warming. In 1965, a panel of scientists warned Lyndon B. Johnson that CO2 from fossil fuels would change the climate. Rather than suggesting emissions reductions, they instead suggested spreading reflective particles in the ocean to reflect sunlight back– an attempt at geoengineering.
Geoengineering is not a new concept, but has just recently become more “mainstream.” The first idea behind geo-engineering was actually developed in the nineteenth century so it’s definitely not a very novel concept or anything. For more information, I’ve included a link that you can refer to.
