For our survival yes, we need fresh water to drink, and cannot drink salt water for hydration. 97% of the water on the Earth is salt water, meaning there is much less fresh water for us to use. Water desalination is a way salt water is turned into fresh water, so there are ways we can make more fresh water. It is very expensive to do though.
I would also argue that salt water is as important as fresh water, because there is a plethora of animals in the sea that depend on it. So I am not sure that fresh water is as important as salt, because it probably supports more life in total than fresh water does. Depends on your point of view I guess.
