Honestly, nothing’s really okay to put in landfills. It tends to sit there forever; even biodegradable matter, deprived of air, will not break down. There are so many items which can’t be recycled which leech toxic chemicals into the surrounding environment, and these are what you should be more worried about going into the landfill than food, which is relatively harmless. A better option, though, if you don’t want to contribute unnecessary waste to the landfill, is to start your own compost heap. You can dispose of most organic waste (not meat, though) this way and use it as fertilizer.
It’s best not to put anything in the landfill. Food waste should be composted whenever possible.
