It can be. While there are some aspects of fish farming that are great for the environment, several aspects are harmful. Fish in farms are fed by food pellets, which when uneaten sink and harm water quality, and are harmful when eaten by fish for whom the food is not intended. Another negative aspect is that farms can actually REDUCE the number of wild fish – by using so many anchovies, mackerel, etc. as food, they often do not raise enough new fish to offset the ‘food fish’ they use.
