Wild Alaskan salmon is one of the more eco-friendly fish stocks in the U.S. The population is managed responsibly, and the fish is usually lower in contaminants than continental salmon.
Farmed salmon are not good for the environment. Atlantic salmon are usually farmed in large-scale, densely stocked pens that pollute surrounding waters with waste and chemicals. The Environmental Defense Fund lists Atlantic salmon as an “eco-worst” choice, whereas wild Alaskan salmon is rated “eco-best.”
