It turns out that the tar balls appearing on California beaches are of natural origins. The source is the Miocene Monterey Formation which naturally seeps oil, and the tar balls have been found all along the coast of California. Ocean currents have taken the tar balls as far south as San Diego and as far north as Point Reyes. So rest assured, it’s not coming from accidental oil spills 🙂
