In every ecosystem is there a species that is at the top of the food chain?

It is important for ecosystems to have a food chain, and wherever there is a chain there is something at the top of it. Predators are always fewer in number than their prey (so that both prey and predator populations can survive), and in addition to feeding themselves, regulate the population of prey animals so it doesn’t get too big and can’t be supported by the environment.
