Good question, harding. El Nino actually refers to a warm water current that appears along the coast of ecuador and Peru. It used to occur annually around Christmas time, only lasting for a few weeks, but has more recently lasted longer, like a few months. The worst recorded El Nino was 97-98.
Hope this helps!
