It is not necessarily more efficient as a fuel, but it can be produced locally so it does not have to be shipped and it produces less carbon than oil. These two factors make it more appealing to use. The US is also the leader in the usage of biomass, producing almost 42000 GWh of electricity. Japan is next in line with 15000 followed by Brazil with 14800. But biomass currently provides less then 1% of today’s the energy needs.
