No. It’s more than that. Lead paint was outlawed in the U.S. in 1978. Eco-freindly paint contains low or trace amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Such paints rely on water as a carrier for the color, rather than petroleum-based solvents. So the harmful emissions water-based paints are lower than those of solvent-borne surface coatings.
In the past few years low-VOC paints have gained in popularity with many large-scale paint suppliers like Benjamin Moore offering eco-friendly paints.
