Of the approximate 300 million citizens of the United States, 80 million Americans participated in Earth Hour. That is a significant number of Americans to promote environmental awareness, it is almost one third of the U.S. population.
I think that although a lot of people have heard of Earth Hour in America, more people need to be aware to participate. It’s a new concept so perhaps it hasn’t had much time to gain strength just yet. It’s also possible that Americans just don’t care! Last year, America was not one of the top countries to participate. New Zealand had the best results.
