The most popular state bird is the cardinal, accounting for seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia). The next most popular state bird is the western meadowlark in six states (Kansas, Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Oregon, Wyoming). Five states have the mockingbird as their official state bird (Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas). If you add up those three totals you will get 18 state birds between the three birds.
