Smog is always the worst during the hottest months of the year. Major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago etc. tend to have the worst air quality days during the summer. Summer smog is also called photochemical smog. This is when the heat of the sun has a specific effect on a combination of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen to activate built up pollution in the atmosphere, creating what we know as smog. This type of smog also tends to contain tiny particles that can be extremely harmful for humans, specifically children and elderly people, to breathe.
Some cities also have smog year-round, and as bmalc889 states, it is the worse during the summer. Norilsk, Russia, a city right above the Arctic Circle, according to Scientific American “has the world’s largest metal smelting complex and therefore, some of the world’s worst smog.” Some claim there is no living plant life within 30 km of the city and that contamination done by heavy metals can be found as far as 60 km away. Beijing, China and New Delhi also have constant haze surrounding their large city areas.Beijing even recorded the world’s highest level of sulfur dioxide concentrations from 2000-2005. Santiago, Chile, and Mexico City, Mexico and Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and Cairo, Egypt, and Chongqing, China, and Guangzhou, China, and Hong Kong, and Kabul, Afghanistan, are all similar smoggy locations on a global scale.
