Is drywall dust really bad for you?

Drywall dust isn’t only a bothersome thing, it can also cause serious health problems. “Over time, breathing the dust from drywall joint compounds may cause persistent throat and airway irritation, coughing, phlegm production, and breathing difficulties similar to asthma …. When silica is present, workers may also face an increased risk of silicosis and lung cancer.” And because drywall dust hangs in the air longer than other dusts, this prolongs the danger.

Drywall dust can cause many health issues and people are often exposed to drywall dust during home remodeling. Drywall can be made using many compounds such as silica, calcite, gypsum, mica, and talc. Exposure to these substances can result in irritation of the nose, throat, eyes, respiratory system, coughing, phlegm production, and difficulty breathing. People that inhale silica have a greater chance of getting silicosis and lung cancer.
