Is draino terrible for the environment?

Drano’s active ingredient is the synthetic chemical sodium hydroxide, more commonly known as caustic soda or lye. Sodium hydroxide is considered a poison and is very harmful to a human or pet if any contact is made with it, but is not defined as a pollutant by the Agency for Toxic Substances because it seperates into fairly harmless components when mixed with water. However, enzymatic biological drain cleaners, made of natural bacteria mixed with enzymes, offer a better-safe-than-sorry alternative and effectively fight clogs. Try Earth Friendly Products’ Enzyme Drain Cleaner or Bi-O-Kleen’s BacOut.
