The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) was created in 1999 to track the financial performance of the leading worldwide sustainability-driven companies. Companies are added to, and deleted from, the DJSI each year. This creates competition among the companies who wish to be leaders in sustainability.
The DJSI seems to be a reliable tool to track the performance and importance of sustainability in the global economy. It also forces businesses to consider their environmental impact if they wish to be considered for inclusion in the index.
