Dogs pant to regulate their body temperature. They don’t have as many sweat glands as humans and panting helps to cool their mouth as well as their blood. While this action helps to cool them down, they still have to be monitored to avoid excess sun exposure. That’s why it’s important to keep them in shade or indoors in the warmer months. This is especially true for smaller dogs.
whedogs pant it is to cool themselves down
Both human sweating and dog panting uses the same mechanism to cool the body down called evaporative cooling. This works because a certain amount of heat is needed to evaporate something into the air. This heat is drawn away from the body leaving it cooler.
