Does the viscosity of your oil improve the efficiency of your car?

Motor oil is essentially a lubricant to avoid the moving parts in your car from grinding together. Generally high viscosity is good because means that the oil will last longer before the heat and friction ware it out. But that doesn’t necessarily effect the efficiency of the car. In fact one could imagine a motor oil so viscous that it actually slowed down the moving parts of the car and making it work harder. Furthermore, the viscosity is also dependent on the temperature, so if you live in a particularly cold place a low viscosity oil maybe better for ensuring easy start up.
