In 2004, the United States government made a new policy regarding current and future use of landmines. The new policy stipulated that landmines would no longer be used by US military forces in the future and would provide funding to getting rid of residual landmines in humanitarian efforts. With a year of that policy taking effect, all mines in the US arsenal were to be disassembled and removed from inventories. The only except to this policy was the use of anti-vehicle mines that could only be authorized by the President of the United States.
