The US and Japan are the leading purchasers of hybrid cars. By the end of 2007, global hybrid car sales were nearly 500,000 cars and over 350,000 were purchased in the US. The US was previously the leading purchaser in the hybrid car market, but in mid 2009 the Japanese market surpassed the US. Toyota, manufacturer of the popular Prius hybrid, is the leading hybrid car manufacturer. Still despite falling purchasing rank, the US still has many more hybrid cars registered than Japan does (279,847 units vs. 77,937 respectively).
