Does the US have enough farmers to return to small scale local food production?

Farming has become less and less profitable for the individual farmer, so more of them have been getting out of the business, or joining with factory farms.  There might be enough farmers, but the farms have been exchanged for factory type farms that people do not always live on.  Due to the difficulties of starting up a new farm, I don’t think it is likely that we will move back toward small scale farms.

I doubt there are enough farmers to return to small scale local production, but it wouldn’t be a good idea to do so anyway.  It is much more profitable and efficient to produce food on larger farms.  Local and efficient food production could be accomplished in urban areas with Urban Agriculture though.  With vertical farms which are basically large skyscrapers that have greenhouses in them cities could potientially become self-reliant for food.
