Actually, it looks like China beat the U.S. in 2009, with China’s population buying 13.6 million new cars as opposed to the U.S., whose population purchased only 10.4 million new cars.
Per capita, the United States owns the most cars (765 per 1000 people). In the case of new cars, we rank as the country who buys the second most. It’s important to realize, however, that cars driven in the US are significantly less fuel-efficient.
