Gas taxes in the United States are actually quite low. Due to political pressure from special interest groups such as oil companies who want to sell more oil, it has stayed low for a long time. Supposedly, the United States uses the money they collect from gas taxes to pay for road maintenance, but the gas tax is not large enough to do that. Europe has a much higher gas tax. Europeans also ride more bicycles more often than Americans. They also have a lower obesity rate.
