Some pharmaceuticals and personal care products are not removed by normal wastewater treatment processes and many are not yet regulated for drinking water quality by the EPA. The effects on ecosystem and human health are not yet known but are the subject of several occurring studies. A recent Canadian report found that the presence of estrogen from disposed birth control that is unable to be filtered out of the water supply decimated small fish populations, thereby disrupting the entire affected ecosystem. Proper disposal of all household toxic substances is imperative to ensuring that treated wastewater will not pollute.
