About between 71 and 100 million tons of paper, total, are used a year. 10% goes into magazines, books and filed documents (that are not recycled). An American uses 50 lbs. of toilet paper a year, whereas the average total use is 650 lbs. over the last years. So toilet paper is <10%, and depending on how you “lump” other things together, is not the largest use.

The Secret Life Series on paper has information about general paper use.
