Yes, Thailand produces a very large amount of shrimp. It is a multi-billion dollar industry for the country, and supplies the world with twenty percent of its shrimp and prawn. The country is the leading producer of Black Tiger Prawn. The success of the shrimp industry has created an economic boom for Thailand, although sceptics doubt that it will bring long-term success for the country.
Yes, it is the world’s number 1 exporter of farmed shrimp… sadly this had led to an enormous amount of mangrove deforestation and ruined fish stocks. The profit from shrimp farming is strictly short-term, and many villages located next to areas where farms have been for a number of years are already experiencing increased water pollution, turbidity and erosion, and decrease in wild fish catch.
