Batteries lose charge over time when they’re not in use due to leakage between terminals. This can be prevented by chilling the batteries when they’re not in use. The chemical reaction in a battery discharge is temperature dependent so the colder the battery, the slower it drains. A cold battery will last about twice as long as a room temperature battery.
Different batteries should be handled differently. However, it helps to keep the battery cool when you are not using it. For rechargeable batteries, you may want to keep an eye on the battery temperature because too much heat can stress a battery and make its like shorter. Most Lithium-Ion batteries are accompanied by a computer chip that monitors the temperature while the battery is charging.
