Does the tar sands project create a lot of GHG’s?

Greenpeace states that oil from the tar sands emits five times as many GHG emissions as conventional oil. It estimates that by 2011, emissions from the tar sands plants alone will be over 80 million tons, which is greater than emissions from all of Canada’s passenger cars today.

The Government of Alberta (the Canadian province best-known for tar sands projects) has published a number of reports documenting progress they have made to lower the emissions from tar sands. However, most skeptics (including, for example, the European Union) continue to oppose the further development of tar sands projects because of their carbon footprint.
